Besides, immunological, genetic and molecular pathways' differences in the establishment of autoimmune diabetes between. T1. DM can be probably generated from more than one loss of tolerance pathways. Five animal models of spontaneous diabetes are mainly preferred for stydying autoimmune diabetes: the NOD mouse, the diabetes- prone. BB rat, the LETL rat, the KDP rat and the LEW- iddm rat. NOD mouse and BB rat are by far the most widely used. It was developed about. Japan, by inbreeding of a strain called Jcl: ICR, which was used to develop CTS mouse, an inbred cataract- prone. Insulitis in NOD mice is initiated at the age of 4- 5 weeks (much earlier compared to humans) and has many differences from. CD4+ and CD8+ T- cells). Finally, after a period of subclinical . These frequencies are achievable only in an SPF (specific pathogen- free) environment. NOD mice are easily prone to protective immunomodulation by a wide spectrum of pathogens. Although, in NOD mice, the. Many genes in the NOD mouse are linked with susceptibility to T1. DM and, like in humans, the MHC alleles play an important. In some cases, genes such as the Ag. CTLA4 seem to be particularly homologous in humans and mice. Besides, both in humans and NOD mice, many. However, in contrast with the NOD mouse, the phenomenon of insulitis has many similarities with humans. Th. 1- lymphocytes predominate. At about the age of 8- 1. BB rat becomes hyperglycaemic and insulinopaenia, polyuria and polydipsia have already. Though, unlike NOD mouse, ketoacidosis is very severe in the BBrat and as in humans, lethal if not treated with insulin. In addition, rats lack T- cells that express ART2, an enzyme with nicotinamide adenine nucleotide. However, the adoptive transfer of ART2+ cells into BB diabetic rats prevents diabetes development. As in all rats, the appearance of autoimmune diabetes in BB rat requires at least one MHC- associated gene and especially. II allele, called RT1 B/Du haplotype (RT1 is designated the rat's MHC) (2. The presence of other signs and symptoms are an important indication of possible causes of left sided abdominal pain and factors that exacerbate or ease the pain are a vital clue to the underlying condition. If the pain is of a sudden onset, unbearable and associated with a high fever, dizziness, confusion or a loss of consciousness, immediate medical attention needs to be sought. Take note of whether the pain is related to eating, sleeping, bowel movements, flatulence (passing gas), movement or menstrual cycle in females. The list of causes of left side abdominal pain are listed below are arranged in order from the upper abdomen (above the navel) to lower abdomen (below the navel). It is intended to serve as a guide but ultimately a diagnosis by a medical professional is necessary so that the appropriate treatment can be commenced as soon as possible. An abdominal ultrasound, x- ray, CT scan or MRI are often necessary for a definitive diagnosis, along with specialized investigations like a flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy or double contrast barium enema for gastrointestinal conditions. UPPER Left Abdominal Pain. Upper left abdominal pain is most often due to a condition afflicting one or more organs or structure in the LUQ (left upper quadrant) of the abdomen. It may also be due to conditions in the thoracic cavity or lower left abdominal area that either refers or radiates to the LUQ. Causes of upper left abdominal pain include: LARGE INTESTINEAlso known as the large bowel, it is responsible for the final stages of water absorption which leads to the formation of a solid stool from liquid intestinal chyme from the small intestine. It houses a number of species of colonic bacteria which are necessary for normal functioning but can be pathological if there is an overgrowth or pathogenic bacteria replace it. The large intestine includes the cecum (junction between small and large intestine), colon, rectum and anus. Conditions of the large intestine that may cause left side abdominal pain includes : Constipation. Volvulus – twisting of the transverse colon around its axis (rare)ABDOMINAL MUSCLESThe abdominal muscles includes several types of muscles that make up the abdominal wall. It protects the abdominal organs which lacks a skeletal shield like the chest cavity and also plays various roles in movement of the legs and thorax. These muscle also stabilize the trunk during standing, walking and running and are prone to injury. Muscular conditions that may cause abdominal pain includes : Muscle strain. Abdominal hernia. You’re trying to rid your body of toxins this week, whether it’s to lose weight, to clear up your skin or just to feel healthier you’ll need to flush your system with lots and lots of detox drinks like fruit infused water, a gallon of water a day to be exact. I’ve included some fruit infused detox waters below for those of you who don’t like the taste of water, or need a push to help you drink more, just be sure not to use any artificial sweeteners in your water. Those little packets of flavoring that people add to their water actually are packed full of toxins that cause fat storage, weight gain, migraines, breakouts? I’ve got you covered, ideally it’s good to skip coffee during this Detox Diet Week, but that’s not always so easy to do. So limit yourself to one cup per day, you can have 1- 2 cups of organic herbal tea, so if you drink coffee in the morning, choose herbal tea for your second cup in the afternoon. Now that you know coffee in moderation is ok, lets talk about what to put in it. We are trying to skip processed sugars this week, so in lieu of sugar or flavored creamers (many with the same issues as the little flavor packets in the water paragraph above) choose an all natural creamer and an all natural sweetener. I like coconut creamer and honey, but you can also try organic half and half, and coconut sugar or maple syrup (don’t knock it till you try it, it’s good!) I’ve included an all natural under 5. The Seven Day Diet is a fad that continues to circulate despite being very unbalanced. This diet is a simple 7 day plan that emphasizes a different food group each day while eliminating others completely. The origin of this diet is unknown and despite its questionable safety people do report losing weight on the 7 day diet. This diet is classified as a fad diet because its strange restrictions, popularity, and short term results. AVOID. This diet should not be considered as a viable option for weight loss. It is unbalanced and very low in calories. Day Diet Meal Plan. Monday. Calories: Varies. Eat as much fruit (and juices) as you wish of any fruits, except bananas. Tuesday. Calories: Varies. Eat all of the vegetables (and vegetable soup) that you wish. Wednesday. Calories: Varies. A combination of Monday & Tuesday (i. Some versions say 8 bananas and 4 glass of milk. Friday. Calories: Varies. Eat 4 steaks of meat (3 ounces each – beef/chicken/fish) with unlimited green vegetables. Saturday. Calories: Varies. Eat 4 steaks of meat (3 ounces each – beef/chicken/fish) with unlimited green vegetables. Sunday. Calories: Varies. Eat 4 steaks of meat (3 ounces each – beef/chicken/fish) with unlimited green vegetables. Exercise Could Be Dangerous. Exercise isn’t included in the 7 day diet and it could be dangerous to perform a lot of physical activity on the potentially low calorie days of the plan, especially for people with blood sugar regulation issues. Calorie Vagueness. One of the most troubling parts of this plan is the vagueness of the calorie amounts for each day. Only on Thursday can we nail down a calorie total. The other days are a bit sketchy at best. For instance, on Monday dieters are told to eat nothing but fruit or drink fruit juice. Thursday would yield 2. This cycle of gaining weight and losing weight is hard on the body and can eventually wreck a person’s metabolism. A diet plan that is not to restrictive, well balanced nutritionally, teaches portion control, and addresses emotional reasons for overeating is always best in the long run. The 7 day diet is not such a plan and will most likely not deliver long term weight loss results or health. Receita de Bolo Diet para Aniversário - Mais uma receita de bolo diet para aniversário. Beat Multiple Sclerosis with a Paleo Diet. By Dr. Mercola. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, degenerative disease of the nerves in your brain and spinal column, caused through a demyelization process. Myelin is the insulating, waxy substance around the nerves in your central nervous system. When the myelin is damaged by an autoimmune disease or self- destructive process in your body, the function of those nerves deteriorate over time, resulting in a number of symptoms, including: Muscle weakness Imbalance, or loss of coordination Astigmatism and vision loss Tremors MS may progress steadily, or acute attacks may be followed by a temporary remission of symptoms. In the video above, Dr. Terry Wahls tells the inspiring story of how she reversed multiple sclerosis after seven years of deterioration on the best conventional treatments available - - simply by changing her diet! Nutrition for Your Brain and Central Nervous System. Through her research into MS, Dr. Wahls discovered that, for some unknown reason, in addition to the commonly known symptoms, MS patients' brains also tend to shrink. This roused her curiosity, and led her to research other diseases that have similar brain shrinkage, namely Huntington's, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's disease. One common denominator is poorly functioning mitochondria. Mitochondria are like little . But she wasn't improving, so she continued sleuthing through the medical research in search for an answer. When she discovered the Institute for Functional Medicine, Dr. Wahl began to find more clues. As mentioned earlier, myelin is an insulating, waxy substance that sheathes the nerves in your central nervous system. Your myelin also needs specific nutrients to function properly, such as: Vitamin B1 Vitamin B9 Vitamin B1. Low-FODMAP diet suggested foods. Below are low-FODMAP foods categorized by group according to the Monash University "Low FODMAP Diet". Vegetables: alfalfa, bean. The paleo diet is based on the belief that a diet of wild animals and plants consumed during the Paleolithic era (about 10,000 years ago) is the healthiest way for. A vegetarian paleo diet? After all, with their savage caveman ways, how could cavemen eat. Well, it’s true and vegetarians can do the paleo diet. Plant-Based Diet for Fitness 3) Meat: A Paleo diet cannot be completed without meat. Since the primitive man relied on meat majorly for his nutrition, a Paleo diet focuses extensively on. Find the best food and snack sources of vitamin K with this amalgam of recipes, snacks and foods that contain the nutrient. First, thank you to everyone who commented on the quiz. I enjoyed reading your thoughts. Is High LDL Something to Worry About? Perhaps this ought to be the first.Animal- based omega- 3 fat Iodine Furthermore, the neurotransmitters in your brain need sulfur and B6 for optimal functioning. Wahls designed her own eating plan, based on the nutrients she now knew she needed for optimal mitochondrial, myelin, and neurotransmitter function, because while your body can create some nutrients, others must be provided through your diet. A Paleo Diet Success Story. The majority of Americans eat high amounts of processed foods, which are loaded with high fructose corn syrup, grains, and harmful chemical additives of all kinds, such as MSG, and artificial sweeteners like aspartame. Unfortunately, this kind of diet is a near- foolproof prescription for chronic disease! While two- thirds of American adults now have either excess weight or obesity, many if not most of them are also, simultaneously, malnourished. According to the graph shown during Dr. Wahls speech, less than half of all Americans get enough vitamin B6 and magnesium in their diet. More than 7. 0 percent do not get sufficient amounts of iodine, and a whopping 8. This, by the way, is why animal- based omega- 3 is one of the few supplements I recommend to virtually everyone. In comparison, ancient peoples and natives around the world who have not significantly altered their diet over time, consume anywhere between two- fold and 1. RDA) of nutrients! Wahls altered her diet to reflect the Paleo- style diet of the hunter- gatherers of old as follows: 3 cups daily (equal to one dinner plate, piled high) of green leaves, such as kale, which are high in vitamins B, A, C, K, and minerals 3 cups daily of sulfur- rich vegetables from the cabbage and onion families, mushrooms, and asparagus. Wild fish for animal- based omega- 3s Grass- fed meat Organ meats for vitamins, minerals, and Co. Q1. 0 Seaweed for iodine and selenium She eliminated processed foods, grains, and starches (which includes potatoes and corn). Amazingly, she began to notice significant improvement in just three months, and at the nine- month mark of her new diet, she was able to go on an 1. This is astounding when you consider that over the past seven years her condition had deteriorated to the point that she had to sit in a reclined zero- gravity chair and could only walk short distances using two canes. That is the power of nutrition! I'd like to add a few suggestions, though. Two factors in particular that can have a profound impact are vitamin D and artificial sweeteners such as aspartame. Vitamin D deficiency can play an important role in MS, and aspartame toxicity has been known to mimic diseases such as MS, so addressing these two items should be at the top of your list—in addition to improving your diet, of course, not in lieu of dietary changes. The Links Between Lack of Sun Exposure, Epstein- Barr Virus, and MSOptimizing your vitamin D levels, which is one of the best things you can do for your health in general, is also one of the best preventive strategies against autoimmune diseases like MS. A large number of studies have confirmed that your risk of MS increases the farther away you live from the equator. In fact, a lack of sunlight was identified as a risk factor for MS as early as 1. Within the United States, your risk of developing MS roughly doubles if you spend your childhood—up to age 1. Another previously established risk factor is the Epstein- Barr virus, which causes glandular fever. Over a decade ago, German researchers demonstrated the association between EBV and MS, showing that in contrast to control populations, 1. MS patients had antibodies against EBV! The authors suggested that EBV might play an indirect role in MS as an activator of the underlying disease process. In one recent study, published in the journal Neurology. B radiation (UVB) and Epstein- Barr virus (EBV) exposure in British MS patients. Using English national Hospital Episode Statistics, they obtained the prevalence of MS and infectious mononucleosis (caused by the Epstein- Barr virus) during the seven- year period, from 1. The UVB intensity data was collected from the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration. You’ve likely heard how important Vitamin B12 is for healthy nerve function and a healthy metabolism, but what about the other B vitamins? After evaluating the relationships between these three variables: MS prevalence, Epstein- Barr virus prevalence, and UVB intensity, they found that UVB exposure alone could explain 6. MS cases across England. When they combined UVB exposure and incidence of glandular fever, 7. The authors concluded that. The effect of UVB on generating vitamin D seems the most likely candidate for explaining its relationship with MS. There is a pressing need to investigate the role of vitamin D and EBV and how they might interact to influence MS risk to identify potential prevention strategies. Wahls mentions, sulfur is one of the essential nutrients missing in MS, and according to research by Dr. Stephanie Seneff, vitamin D supplements are unlikely to provide the identical benefits that you get when exposing large amounts of skin to the sun, as oral vitamin D supplements are unsulfated. One such study, published in 2. D- containing multivitamin supplements were 4. Keep in mind that this study was based on FAR lower vitamin D dosages than what we now know are needed, so if you optimize your levels, you're likely to reduce your risk by more than 4. As for dosage, if you're taking an oral supplement, it's important to understand that there's no dosage at which . The most important factor is your serum level, so you'll want to get your level measured regularly to determine if you need to take more or less than the general recommendation to stay within the optimal range. That said, based on the most recent research by Grassroots. Health—an organization that has greatly contributed to the current knowledge on vitamin D through their D* Action Study—it appears as though most adults need about 8,0. IUsof vitamin D a day. The Dangers of Aspartame. According to some experts, such as Dr. Russell Blaylock, a professor of neurosurgery at the Medical University of Mississippi, the damage caused by ingesting excessive amounts of aspartic acid from aspartame can cause serious chronic neurological disorders and a myriad of other acute symptoms. Aspartic acid is an amino acid. Taken in its free form (unbound to proteins), it significantly raises the blood plasma level of aspartate and glutamate. Wahls mentions the importance of antioxidants for proper cell and brain function. The aspartate and glutamate in aspartame have the opposite impact. Too much aspartate or glutamate in your brain kills certain neurons by allowing the influx of too much calcium into the cells. This influx triggers excessive amounts of free radicals, which kill the cells. This is why aspartate and glutamate are referred to as . Aspartame also rapidly metabolizes to methanol, another potent neurotoxin. Aspartame toxicity often reveals itself through central nervous system disorders and compromised immunity, and can mimic the symptoms of and/or worsen several diseases that fall into these broad categories. This drug is quite deceptive, because even though it's a natural substance, it's typically given in a dose that shuts down your body's natural feedback loop. As a result, it tends to do more harm than good. It is my strong recommendation to not use these drugs, as they are some of the most toxic drugs used in the field of medicine. Wahls is a poster child for the complete lack of benefit gleaned from such drug treatments. The profound healing that can be achieved using nutrition, and her dietary recommendations are spot- on. Below is a summary of my lifestyle recommendations for MS. Many are identical to the general health principles I've been teaching for years, but a few stand out as being specifically applicable to the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as MS. The preferred method to raise (and maintain) your vitamin D levels is by regularly exposing large amounts of your skin to sunshine, or by using a safe tanning bed. If neither is available, you can use an oral supplement of vitamin D3. As a general guideline, vitamin D experts recommend 8,0. IU's per day for adults, and about 3. IU's per pound for children, but you should take as much as is necessary to elevate and maintain your blood levels within the optimal range. LEMONADE DIET GUIDELINES. So, here are my tops tips for getting started on your PCOS diet: Know why you need to do what you're doing. I'm the kind of person who has to know why I'm doing what. My clients who’ve aren’t having regular periods tend to be some of the fastest responders to a tailored nutrition and supplement program, primarily because the loss of menstruation is often be a sign of underlying nutrient deficiencies. Even if you’re eating a whole foods, Paleo diet, there are many nutrients that can be inadequate if you’re not making a concerted effort to include specific foods and/or supplements. There has been evidence accumulating over the years that certain nutrients may become depleted while a woman is on an oral contraceptive. While there are likely dozens of nutrients that are important in regaining your fertility and monthly cycle, there are a few in particular that I find to be extremely effective in helping to recover the menstrual cycle. Zinc. Zinc is a critical nutrient to consider, and many nutritionists recommend an increase in zinc intake for female clients struggling with loss of menstruation following the use of the Pill. There is evidence demonstrating that women who take oral contraceptives have lower plasma zinc levels, so they may have higher need for this important mineral for fertility. Some healthcare practitioners theorize that taking oral contraception might either cause zinc deficiency or even copper overload, which could contribute to the loss of healthy menstrual function. Either way, I always include zinc as part of my recommendations for my clients with amenorrhea. Zinc can be sometimes difficult to replenish without short term therapeutic supplementation, even in the context of a whole foods diet. If you’re willing to eat lots of shellfish (e. I usually recommend 1. While many of us in the ancestral health community feel that everyone can benefit from daily magnesium supplementation, it’s especially important for those on birth control (or coming off birth control) to supplement with magnesium. Magnesium is difficult to get enough of in our modern diets, and some evidence shows that serum magnesium levels are reduced by oral contraceptive use. If you have a history of birth control use, I recommend using a chelated form of magnesium and taking 2. Vitamin B6. Finally, vitamin B6 is another nutrient that is not often discussed but can be very helpful in restoring menstrual function in those with post birth control syndrome. A 2. 01. 1 study found that those who used oral contraceptives had lower plasma vitamin B6 concentrations, and one type of amenorrhea caused by high prolactin levels was able to be treated using B6 supplementation, suggesting that supplementing with B6 may be beneficial in post birth control syndrome. Vitamin B6 is found in a variety of foods, and is generally safe to take as a supplement at doses below 1. I like Designs for Health’s Sublingual Vitamin B6, which has the added benefit of providing a small amount of chelated zinc. At 5. 0 mg per teaspoon, it’s a high enough dose to replenish any depleted stores, but not so much to risk toxicity with long term use. Other Nutrients. There are other nutrients that I address with my clients, either making diet or supplement recommendations to address potential deficiencies in their diets. One nutrient that I find tends to be quite low in many of my young female clients’ diets is vitamin A. You can get plenty of vitamin A by eating 4- 8 ounces of beef or lamb liver every week, and that’s almost always something I recommend to my clients who are struggling to regain their periods. Another important nutrient is vitamin D, which typically comes from adequate sun exposure but can be helpful as a supplement for those with blood levels below 3. L. There are many nutrients that may be negatively affected by long term birth control use, and every person’s needs are unique. If you’re struggling with post birth control syndrome and aren’t sure if your nutrition has been optimized for your recovery, I recommend working with a knowledgable nutritionist who can help assess your diet for possible nutrient gaps. Entrain Your Circadian Rhythms. In our modern world of late night TV, attachment to our cell phones, 2. Circadian rhythms are physical, mental and behavioral changes that follow a roughly 2. People who fly across several time zones experience circadian rhythm disruption as “jet lag”, but even less dramatic shifts in your circadian rhythms can cause significant health problems, including infertility and amenorrhea. Your circadian rhythms affect all endocrine hormone secretions, including melatonin, cortisol, thyroid stimulating hormone, growth hormone, prolactin, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), insulin, leptin, and more. And some research does show that circadian rhythm disruption from jet lag and shift work can wreak havoc on women’s reproductive function. Proper light exposure includes getting adequate daytime sunlight and appropriate elimination of bright light at night. The biggest influence is the light hitting your eyes, so I strongly suggest making an effort to get outside, or at least sit by a window, for most of the daylight hours. On the flip side, you also need to ensure you’re not getting blue light exposure once the sun has gone down. There are ways you can address this issue even if you can’t go outside during the day or shut off all your lights when the sun goes down. The first is to get a light therapy lamp that can help provide the right spectrum of daytime light during your day, which you can set up at your work desk. The second is to block blue light at night, and the easiest way to do this is by using these super fashionable orange goggles. You can also use orange light bulbs as your evening lighting option. And of course it should go without saying that you need to prioritize your sleep, going to bed early enough to get a full 8 hours of sleep every night. Eat Enough Carbs and Calories For Your Activity Levels. This is one of the most difficult recommendations for many of my clients, as frequently those dealing with post birth control syndrome are also trying to lose weight. And more often than not, their weight loss attempt includes reducing their food intake and cutting down on carbohydrates. While this strategy may help with short term weight loss, it’s definitely not conducive to your hormonal health to significantly limit your food intake in this way. It’s a well known phenomenon in the medical world, called the Female Athlete Triad, where women under eat and overtrain so much that they lose their menstrual function, and even put themselves at risk for osteoporosis. Stefanie Ruper has written a fantastic article on the problems with being overly restrictive with your food intake, and how dozens of her readers have written to her complaining that they lost their menstrual function when switching to a Paleo diet. She acknowledges that it’s not the Paleo diet that is the issue per se, but that those who switch to Paleo often get stuck in an overly restrictive, low carbohydrate approach that does not support healthy endocrine function through various effects on the HPA axis and thyroid hormone conversion. I think it’s safe to say that those women dealing with post birth control syndrome should also be wary about how restrictive their diet is, and ensure that they’re getting enough calories and carbohydrates to support their activity levels. I generally recommend at least 3. Trying to quickly lose weight while dealing with amenorrhea is rarely a good combination. And the other side of this issue is avoiding overtraining, which is another problem I see in many of my young female clients trying to “lean out”. As I mentioned, this overtraining and undereating combination is known as the Female Athlete Triad and is well known as a cause of amenorrhea. Overtraining means different things to different people; what might be a normal training schedule for an elite athlete may cause burnout and hormonal disruption in a non- athlete. If you’re dealing with amenorrhea, you need to take a serious look at your training regimen and make sure you’re not overdoing it. Manage Your Stress. This is another big issue for many of my young female clients experiencing amenorrhea. Stress is generally unavoidable in our modern lives, but that doesn’t mean you have to let it disrupt your life and throw off your hormone regulation. Chronic stress causes hypothalamic. Getting Off Birth Control Pills? Now What? First off, I want to tell you that I have received and overwhelming response from all you readers in regards to my birth control pill post (if you haven’t read it go HERE). It is amazing how many of you out there are searching for explanations and answers. I commend you all for sharing your story with us, and for having the guts to come out and express what your experience has been like. I have received on average 1. I think it is time for me to share with all of you the advice I have been sharing with them. Now, to make this very clear, this advice is based on MY personal experience, and my experience working with others. I am not a doctor specializing in the endocrine system, and I am not saying that this is a full proof plan. This is simply what I found has worked best. Secondly, getting off the birth control pill is a choice, and it was my personal choice. I am not here to tell you what is right for you and your body. If you have read my previous post about the Birth Control Pill, then you may have been waiting for this follow up for quite a long time. And the reason it has taken be so long to write it is because frankly it has taken me awhile to figure what in the world to do, because this most certainly has been a journey. Coming off the pill puts your body into a swing where you can experience a host of symptoms, some of which seem as though you are going backwards, but a ton that solidify that you are in fact making process. But I can say that after 3 years of being off the pill, I have never felt better. Yay!! It will provide you with a guide on how to relieve symptoms. Birth Control Pills health side effects. How to get off birth control pills naturally without side effects including depression, acne, weight gain, anxiety, hair loss, pcos symptoms, period loss. You have to realize, that after years of natural hormone production sedation, your body has to re- learn how to make and balance your hormones. This is not an easy task, and it does take time for your body to adjust. Therefore, MANAGE your expectations. EXPECT that things are not going to be perfect, and IT IS going to take TIME. I cannot tell you how long it is going to take, because every body is different, and the duration of your time on the pill is different. But I can tell you, that you CAN normalize your hormones, you can make them yourself, but you have to plan, be diligent and invest in the process. This does not happen over night, but the benefits are so great it is worth the challenge. Now, I am going to give you a run- down of the strategy that I took to balance my hormones. Each person may have to adjust this program to her body type, weight, and hormone issues. Therefore, use this as a guide, but do realize that in some cases, this may not be the end- all be- all for you. You may have to get your hormones tested (I like the salivary hormone test), and you may have to work with an alternative practitioner. People who are dealing with more complicated cases such as PCOS, endometriosis, etc. Finally, if you have or are dealing with any diseases, conditions or cancers, make sure to check with your practitioner before taking any supplements. Photo credit: Brooke Cagle. The Foundation: Diet – diet is going to be really important in getting the hormones back on track because you need to provide the body with the necessary tools, or nutrients, to make hormones. Secondly, you cannot consume foods that are going to interfere with hormone production and balance. Diet is essential, and you cannot expect changes without a change in diet. Check out my Hormone Balancing Food & Herb Diet for more details. Xenoestrogens – these guys are a big player in getting your hormones back into balance. Xenoestrogens are estrogen mimickers that act as or imitate estrogen in the body. They can either be synthetic or natural chemical compounds and they interrupt your normal hormone balance. It is necessary to eliminate these guys from your diet because they will BLOCK your natural production. Not good. Main culprits of xenoestrogen exposure: Conventional meat: red meat, chicken, pork, turkey. Conventional dairy: cheese, milk, butter, ice cream, yogurt, cottage cheese. Conventional produce. Soy. Beer and conventional wine. Plastics: water bottles, Tupperware. Conventional personal care products. Aluminum canned goods: Look for BPA- freesoy and birth control. Saturated Fats – saturated fat is what the body uses to actually make hormones by the liver. Consuming healthy saturated fats daily is going to be very important for getting your hormones back on track. I always suggest consuming coconut oil or butter, because it is also very stimulating to the thyroid, a key player in hormone balance. Bioflavonoids – these guys are going to act as little building blocks for hormone production. My favorite way to get these in the body is through the use of pollens. Bee pollen and flower pollen. My personal favorite product for flower pollens is Ultra Pollen by Premier Research Labs - Taking 6 daily is a great start. Another option is to make a homemade honey, bee pollen tonic. Both honey and bee pollen are rich in bioflavonoids and nutrients that are essential to normalizing hormones. This tonic can also help restore normal periods, when there is a loss of a period, or if the period is absent once coming off of birth control (amenorrhea). Secondly, this honey and pollen tonic is also an excellent LIVER tonic. The liver performs hormone synthesis, and without proper liver function, your hormones cannot balance. Therefore, this honey and pollen mixture has a two- fold benefit. You can try using both the Ultra Pollen with the honey mixture for a stronger effect, or you can take one or the other. The honey mixture is a great one to start with to see if it is therapeutic enough. It is also the cheaper option too.* To make the honey pollen mixture: get a large glass jar and mix 2/3 RAW, unheated honey and 1/3 raw bee pollen. Both must be truly raw, otherwise, the benefits are not going to be there. Secondly, if you are allergic to pollens, do not take. Vitamin Replacement. If you had read my first post on birth control pills, then you probably remember me mentioning that birth control pills cause a vitamin B6 deficiency. B6 deficiency leads to poor gallbladder function. As a result, you may experience symptoms such as poor sleep, inability to digest fatty foods, gas, nausea when eating, bumps on the back of your arms, dry skin and overall toxicity since the gallbladder’s job is to be an exit route, via the bile, for toxins coming from the liver. Therefore it is imperative that you supplement with LIVE- SOURCE B6 and the complex of B vitamins. I personally use 1 tsp of Gallbladder ND by Premier Research Labs daily. I also like to pair it with a general B vitamin product called Max B ND by Premier Research Labs, so that my B vitamins stay in balance. In some cases, depending on how long you have been on the pill, you may need to take B6 indefinitely. If you need a capsule form alternative, use this P5. P 5. 0 B6 supplement by Pure Encapsulations.* Note, not all B6 and B vitamins are created equally, and this specific product is what I have found to work the best. Do not be surprised if you do not get results from other products. Xenoestrogen Detoxification. One of the key things that needs to be done in order to balance hormones after coming off birth control is to detoxify xenoestrogens from the body. Xenoestrogens are a large reason why the hormones come out of balance once coming off of birth control pills. Therefore, a key component to getting hormones back on track (restoring normal periods and fertility, stimulating hair growth, preventing acne and mood swings, restoring libido) we will be detoxifying and converting xenoestrogens from both the birth control pill and from other exposures. My favorite way to clear xenoestrogens is with a compound called DIM, or diindolymethane. DIM is a phytonutrient (plant nutrient) that is found in cruciferous vegetables. Research studies have found that it is incredibly effective in clearing the xenoestrogens from the body, helping to rebalance hormones. I personally like using the supplement DIM Detox by Pure Encapsulations. This product not only contains the compound DIM, which promotes healthy estrogen conversion in the body, but it also contains other ingredients that support liver detox and xenoestrogen conversion. It contains milk thistle and sulphorane (excellent liver detoxifying agents), alpha lipoic acid, n- acetyl- l- cysteine, taurine, glycine and methionine which are needed to fuel the detoxification pathways at the liver. Finally, it contains calcium- d- glucarate which research has also found effective in detox, and to regulate estrogen metabolism (supporting hormone balance). I personally used 2 capsules daily. Symptom Specific. The birth control pill influences the body in such a way that you most likely have experienced some sort of side effect. Therefore, the following are a few supplements that I used to offset those side effects and to support the normalization of my hormones. Loss of Period – Not getting your period after coming off birth control is not a surprising side effect. Your ovaries have been suppressed for years, and it sometimes takes time for them to start working again. Most women find that their period returns in 1- 2 cycles. If your period does not return within a couple months or so, I would recommend starting with the Bioflavonoid recommendations above. Either the Ultra. Pollen or the honey/pollen mixture is an easy and gentle way to start. I would also pair this with DIM Detox to help detoxify from the pill and support the liver. If after a month or two the period still does not return, there are a couple options. |
